What’s included in the course?

I’ve detailed some of the main course elements above: just under 500 video modules, weekly questions & answer sessions with me (recorded and made available for everyone), a 24/7 digital community town hall, daily access to the teaching assistants, special animations and illustrations to help convey some of the more difficult principles, and ultimately, the PDC certificate itself.

When will the course formally begin?

December 30th. This is when I will release the first batch of instructional material.

Once 24 weeks are up, what happens?

We will keep access to all the course materials, videos, PDFs, animations, and the like for an additional 28 weeks after the course formally ends. This gives you more than a year’s worth of access to all the course materials. If additional time is needed, no problem: Just let us know and we’ll do all we can to help.

What happens after the 30th?

On the 30th, and each subsequent Friday for the next 19 Fridays, I will release a batch of content (anywhere from 5 to 14 instructional modules) based on thematic fit and time load. These modules make up the heart of the course. The aim is to make the workload manageable, and have the content presented in a manner that feels like a single, themed unit.

You’ll then have Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday to watch the new material. During these 4 days, we encourage you to watch the videos, note anything that requires additional clarification, post your comments and questions in the discussion sections, and engage with the other members of the course community, TAs, and … me (!)

Monday at 5 pm EST, my TAs will hand me a list of questions that were particularly interesting / difficult / or require some time to really explain. I will then spend Tuesday and Wednesday going through these questions and doing a video recording of as many as I can. Our media team will then race to get these exported, cleaned up, and prepare them for publication. Our aim is to get these to you along with the next batch of core instructional materials the following Friday, such that you get new materials AND the recordings of the Q&A.

Why did you pick 24 weeks?

The face-to-face PDC is a full-time intensive that is taught over two weeks. Some who have taught an online PDC have tried to do it in as little as 8-12 weeks, but invariably students ask for more time. Based on my 30+ years of experience, and having done it both online and offline, I’ve decided to pace the course at 24 weeks. I believe that anything much shorter than this is too fast, and had even flirted with the idea of making it a year-long course. However, I decided to aim for a happy middle-ground, as moving at a moderate pace allows the material to really soak in and lays a solid foundation for all future permaculture work. The material is voluminous, dense, and really takes time to absorb. Going through the material at a faster pace may be emotionally appealing and is certainly possible (and we may provide options for those of you who want to do this), but we’re confident that the sweet-spot is 24 weeks.

Do I need special equipment for the course?

Yes: Your heart, attention, and any internet-enabled device (computer, iPad, phone, etc.) Chrome has so far worked 100% of the time, so we recommend that whether you use a Mac or PC. No farm, land, bulldozer, shovels or anything else of the sort needed :) If all you have is a windowsill, a little passion, and some imagination, you’re ready to get started.

You mention 20 weeks in some places, and 24 in others. Which is it?

All the course content will be published and available to you over 20 weeks, i.e. week 20, the final “new” content will be published. The final 4 weeks will serve as a chance to catch up. This gives the best of both worlds: Those who want to finish quickly can do so in 20 weeks, while those who appreciate a more leisurely pace can do so with the extra month. In these final 4 weeks, my TAs and I will continue to be available for review and Q&As.
